FOUR OPEN POSITIONS

All positions are remote. We’re hiring globally.

If you don’t find a position for you, send us an email anyways at info@barthletix.com.

Senior Game Backend Engineer

MISSION

Working with a small team, you’ll be building the backend networking platform for BarX games. The goal is to build out a reliable, scalable microservices backend for our games that can grow as our business grows. The overall system includes networking and communications, user data and data security, metrics and observability, all wrapped in a standardized CI/CD framework.

YOU

You are a software engineer with 5-10 years of experience in backend and cloud technology, at least some of which should be with Node. Ideally you have shipped one or more published games, preferably mobile games, and understand some of the technologies and techniques used in free-to-play gaming. You are a generalist who can write reliable code for the cloud, including CI/CD and test suites, and you know your way around AWS. You understand something about databases and scalability. You are comfortable working remotely, alone or in small teams, with minimal supervision.

ROLE

You’ll be a member of a small engineering team and work closely with producers and developers to build out a system to support small sports-oriented multiplayer games. The role includes:

  • Designing, building, testing, and documenting a set of standard APIs for communicating between the various parts of our system.
  • Building these systems in a way that enables scalability and zero-downtime deployment, and working with cloud providers to deploy and monitor them.
  • Designing, implementing, and also using common code that can be used across multiple projects..
  • Maintaining and extending existing systems as we grow.
  • Helping to make the build vs buy decisions on libraries, technologies, and tooling.
  • Advising on system design and architecture and working with producers and with other engineers to evolve the designs.

We’re not hung up on the particular tech. Our current systems are built on AWS using JavaScript, TypeScript, Node, Socket.io, GraphQL, and Redis and deployed with Docker and Kubernetes, but we are still quite young and prepared to change these technologies if we see real value in it. However, if you have no experience in our current stack this is probably not the job for you.

CULTURE

BarX is a startup with a fully decentralized, international team, and no central office. You should be comfortable with (and ideally experienced in) working from home (or wherever you can be most productive). We try to minimize meetings but they are sometimes needed; you should expect to attend multiple video meetings per week during core hours. Currently our team is mostly based in the Central European time zone, extending into America. We communicate by email, Slack, and video chat. You must be generally available on these channels during the core hours of 1400-1800 CET on weekdays.

As a young startup, we are constantly evolving what we are focused on, in what we need to work on, and how we get things done. This means you should be flexible, agile and preferably opinionated to help us mature. You should be comfortable with the risk and agility of a startup.

We care about our team members and although we are still small, we take diversity seriously, and we actively encourage members of historically disadvantaged communities to apply.

 WHAT WE OFFER

  • The opportunity to participate in building product from ground-up in a fast-growing start-up, exciting daily challenges as part of a talented team, as well as the opportunity for personal development and growth.
  • An attractive compensation package will be constructed, consisting of a base salary and participation in an employee stock option pool.

Senior Unity Game Engineer

MISSION

Working with a small team, you’ll be building BarX games using Unity3d to target android and web platforms. The goal is to build many small games optimized for playing in small groups in bars, using phones for controllers.

YOU

You are a software engineer with 5-10 years of experience, including 2 or more years of production experience in game development using C# in Unity. Ideally you have shipped one or more published games, preferably mobile games. You are comfortable working remotely, alone or in small teams, with minimal supervision. You are a generalist who can write a shader today and a network library (with test suite) tomorrow, then pivot to art integration.

ROLE

You’ll be a member of a small engineering team and work closely with designers, artists, and developers to build out small sports-oriented multiplayer games designed to take only a couple of minutes to play. The role includes:

  • Building and tuning gameplay for small fun games individually to make for compelling experiences that encourage players to come back for more. You will have a major role in helping to ensure that the games are fun and replayable.
  • Designing, implementing, and also using common code in C# that can be used across multiple games.
  • Interfacing with and building libraries to support backend APIs for data and game communications.
  • Working with our designers and artists to build rich, well designed, UI and UX that makes the application more than just a flat experience. Our apps are inhabited by avatars that embody the character and personality of our customers. Ideally, you’ve worked with animators, technical artists, and 3D modellers and you’re excited by the challenge of bringing their vision to life.
  • Working with Unity’s built-in systems to create games that are easily deployed and maintained: you know about and can constructively use the Unity UI along with creating asset bundles, unit tests, documentation, and automation to create reproducible, production quality builds.
  • Our current deployment platform is android-based. Extra points if you have experience with getting mobile platforms to shine, particularly where performance and graphics are concerned.
